Tree Root Remediation Services

Restore Tree Health & Protect Your Property

At Woodland TreeWorks, we specialize in professional Tree Root Remediation services to help preserve tree health while preventing damage to surrounding structures. Whether invasive roots are causing foundation issues or your trees are struggling due to soil compaction and poor drainage, our expert solutions ensure a balanced and sustainable environment for both your trees and property.

Why Tree Root Remediation?

  1. Prevent Structural Damage

Tree roots can grow into foundations, sidewalks, driveways, and underground utilities, causing costly damage. Our remediation services help manage root growth safely and effectively.

  1. Improve Tree Health

Compacted soil, poor drainage, and root girdling can weaken a tree’s root system. We identify and address these issues to promote healthier root growth and improve overall tree stability.

  1. Enhance Soil Conditions

Healthy soil is key to strong root development. We use aeration, decompaction, and soil amendments to create optimal growing conditions for your trees.

  1. Sustainable & Non-Invasive Solutions

We prioritize non-destructive methods, such as air excavation and root pruning, to minimize damage while promoting tree longevity.

Below is the Tree Root Remediation process performed on an Oak tree in a lawn with severely compacted soil.

1. Sod around the tree is removed.

2. Using a specialized air tool, the compacted soil is broken apart and aerated, and a soil amendment is mixed in.

3. Any issues found in the root system are able to be dealt with at this point.

4. Finally, the area is finished with mulch.

Radial Trenching

Radial trenching is a soil improvement technique that enhances aeration, modifies soil composition, and encourages deeper root growth with minimal disturbance. It is particularly beneficial for trees in compacted or anaerobic soils.

Benefits of Radial Trenching:

  • Helps trees with shallow or poor soil conditions
  • Encourages deep root growth beyond the trunk and between structural roots
  • Useful in areas where minimal soil disturbance is preferred
  • Can be part of a long-term strategy for struggling trees, with repeated applications over several years

The Process:

  • Using our pneumatic air tool, trenches are created around the tree radiating out from the base
  • The trenches are filled with our custom highly organic soil mixture
  • Grass seed is then installed on the top of each trench
  • After a few weeks, the grass seed will fill in

Vertical Mulching

Vertical mulching helps de-compact and enhance soil deep into the tree root zone, making it especially beneficial for areas with poor drainage, shallow or impervious

soils, or minimal disturbance requirements. This technique improves root growth, tree stability, and overall soil health.

Benefits of Vertical Mulching:

  • A great option for covering a large area of lawn without disturbing the entire lawn.
  • Ideal for sites with shallow soil, hard-pan, or anaerobic conditions
  • Encourages deep root growth and enhances tree stability
  • Improves soil aeration and drainage
  • Minimizes disturbance in shared planting areas with ground cover or perennials

The Process:

  • Using our pneumatic air tool, holes are created throughout the root zone 6-18" deep
  • The holes are filled with our custom highly organic soil mixture
  • Grass seed is then installed on the top of each hole
  • After a few weeks, the grass seed has come in and you will notice the holes disappear

Root Collar Excavation

Notice how this Tree was planted too deep.

When a tree’s root collar is buried too deep—whether due to improper planting depth, subsidence, construction backfilling, or mulch buildup—it can lead to long-term harm. Root collar excavation helps address this issue by exposing the base of the tree and correcting damaging root conditions.

Symptoms of a buried root collar:

  • Rot or infection at the base of the trunk
  • High-growing roots that disrupt the natural root flare
  • Girdling roots that constrict the trunk and root flare
  • Root distortion due to compacted or anaerobic soil conditions

Benefits of root collar excavation:

  • Minimizes damage while exposing the root collar
  • Allows arborists to identify and remove problematic roots
  • Helps improve tree health and stability

Root Pruning

Root pruning is essential for construction or maintenance projects that intrude into a tree’s root zone, helping to protect tree health

while preventing damage to structures or utilities.

Air-spading is a safe and efficient method for locating roots and utilities before pruning.

  • Necessary to correct girdling roots around the lower trunk or buttress roots.
  • Ideal for site work such as foundations, pavements, drainage, and utilities.
  • Encourages future root growth while minimizing negative impacts.
  • Licensed arborists make clean cuts using hand pruners after excavation.
